Greetings! My name is Akesha.
I love to quill. I have always been passionate about art. When I was young, I loved to draw and paint. I competed in art competitions. As I got older, I lost my way from art. I took the more “practical” route and became a mathematician, and eventually an educator.
Fast forward a few years, and now I am combining my skills and training with my first love. As an educator, I believe in Connected Learning (https://clalliance.org/about-connected-learning/) which is the idea that young people can excel when they have the chance to explore their personal interest and passion with friends and caring adults so that learning in the projects are linked to academic achievements, career success or civic engagement. While I am not young, I definitely see ways to connect quilling to math… but I also see it as a way to unwind (pun indented) and have fun.
I have 25+ years training as an educator, which I apply in the courses I teach to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for my students. My students walk away from each class with the foundational information they need to continue quilling, confidence in their skills, and a project of which they can be proud.
